Working Nights

Working Nights

One of the biggest struggles when you moonlight as a writer is to find time within your otherwise busy day. I have a full-time job. I have a family. These things deserve their own time. What I did in order to write Crown of Caphedra was to become a much more regular, early riser. I had to get up early on weekdays in order to catch a bus to work, anyway, so I kept it up on weekends and found a niche for my writing time.

Now my commute has changed and I’ve had to consider the effect of sleep deprivation on my middle-aged health. I try to catch a bit more sleep in the morning, but on the flip side, my kids are older and require less attention when it comes to respecting bedtimes. (They don’t respect them, but they aren’t paid the same attention to maintain them as when they were little.)

I’ve always been a natural nighthawk, and I think my kids inherited that. But with them showing more independence in the evenings, I can finally go back to getting some writing down after sunset, instead of before sunrise. It’s been great and a huge boost to my word count has been the result.

Here’s the proof. The first draft of Kings of Kramwen is two-thirds done. I’m almost into writing the endgame sections. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as it develops. I may be putting out a call for beta readers before long.
